The Inspiration Station Challenge: June

The Inspiration Station Challenge is a monthly challenge for all types of crafty projects. It starts the first Monday of each month and runs to the end of the month. Each month there is a new image to use for inspiration and it is a perfect way to jump start you creativity!

You can find all the details and link up your projects to play along on the Inspiration Station Challenge Blog! P.S by entering your projects you get entered into a giveaway!

Making my Spinner Card

When I saw the fun inspiration image for this month, I decided it would be a prefect time to make my first ever spinner card! The fair ride in the image spins around and around (and around!) so I though having a spinning image on my card would be so fun!

I decided to create an A6 size card because I had some A6 envelopes in my stash that never get used and the design I wanted to do ended up working better on a slightly larger card.

Mirror Stamping

One of the things you run into when making a spinner card is that you need to be able to create a reversible image so that when it spins you don't just see the back of the image. There are some stamp sets that are set up to do this already or you could use an image that is symmetrical (like a butterfly).

But I had my heart set on using this cute cat image so to achieve a reversible image I did some mirror stamping.

Here is how I did it:
  1.  I placed one of my photopolymer grip mats inside my MISTI (I used one from Picket Fence Sudios but any of the photopolymer grip mats should work fine).

  2. I stamped directly onto the grip mat using alcohol marker friendly ink

  3. I lined up my cardstock perfectly into the corner of my MISTI and then pressed the cardstock down onto the grip mat where I had stamped the image

  4. Then, I repeated step 2 and 3  to get a darker image. Because I was using the corner of my MISTI to position my cardstock I could line it up perfectly to re-stamp.

Then I just had to stamp the image normally to create two images that are perfect mirror images.

Ohuhu Alcohol Marker Colour combinations

These are the Ohuhu markers I used to colour in the images.

  • Red: R8, R160 & R200

  • Orange: YR190, YR170 & YR250

  • Yellow: Y1, Y050 & Y030

  • Green: GY42, Y190 & GY4

  • Blue: PB2, B140 & B120

  • Gray: CG5 & NG03

  • Cat: YR2, YR33, Y1 & Y3

I shaded the underside of the umbrella with the gray markers and then went over the area with the mid-tone colours in stripes so that it looks like you can see the rainbow stripes from inside the umbrella too.

Creating the Spinner

To create the spinner I cut a circular window in the front of my card and my card front. I fussy cut the cat images and then adhered them together with a strand of clear thread sandwiched between the images.

I dry embossed the cardfront using a stencil before assembling my card to add some texture to the front of my card. Then I used some double sided tape to attached the top and bottom of the clear thread to my card bases making sure that the cat image was approximately centred in the window. After the spinner element was added, I adhered the cardfront on top sandwiching the clear thread between the cardbase and the cardfront.

When you wind up the spinner and close the card it will start spinning as soon as you open it!

Finishing touches

To finish off the card, I added some soft ink blending to the inside of the card so that there is a little bit of a background behind the spinning cat. I also stamped a sentiment directly behind where the cat image is when the card is closed. So it is covered when the card is closed but when you open it you can read it!

I heat embossed a sentiment strip for the front of the card and glued it in place to finish my card!
